Dear Parents,

Welcome to the new academic year! It is wonderful to have the children back after a long summer break.  We are looking forward for one more year full of opportunities and experiences that will make them aware of the world around them. The big idea for Key Stage 1 is Making the Complex World Simple.

This key stage caters to our youngest learners. They enter the learning journey at a time when their brain is at its most competent and absorbent state. They are wired to learn. For these learners, their world, people, surrounding, events is a huge complex mosaic. As they go through Key Stage 1, they develop competencies to chip away at the large picture through simple known.

To enable them to go through this journey from complex to simple, the Key Stage 1 program helps the students to reach towards the following beacons

Language Beacon

Relevance – Use language to interact/communicate with the world

(Listening/Speaking/Reading/Writing to express oneself)

    * Uses Phonemic awareness to help decode letters/words
    * Applies language structure to make sense of the written/spoken words
    * Reads with fluency to enable comprehension (this does not apply to Pre K and K1 in term one)
    * Speaks to communicate about self/thoughts/feelings to others
    * Applies all the above skills to become more competent and less helpless

Logical/Mathematical Beacon

Relevance – Develop number sense

(Procedural fluency/Conceptual Understanding)

    * Able to see patterns and make predictions (inductions)
    * Able to manipulate numbers to reach desired outcome
    * Understands ‘numbers’ as having value/meaning/application in life

Scientific Thinking Beacon

Relevance – Provocation leads to reasoning

(Observation/Data Interpretation)

    * To understand how the natural world functions – cause and effect as nothing is random in nature
    * Fosters a spirit of questioning/enquiry

Creative Thinking Beacon

Relevance – Nurturing curiosity and habits of mind

Interpersonal/Intrapersonal Beacon

Relevance – Develops a healthy identity of self/and appreciation of others

Craftsmanship Beacon

Relevance – Understands that quality brings a sense of self worth

We will help you understand these beacons and how they enable children through our MLV’s and postings throughout the year. We hope this overview of the big idea of the key stage helps you to understand the program and see the relevance of what we do.

Looking forward to a fantastic partnership between us.

Regards

Jahnavi and Deepa

Quotable Quotes

Parent Quote after attending Orientation for the new academic year:

"The presentation was excellent.  Everyone got completely overwhelmed by it.  I guess you have just raised the bar of expectations sky high.  Also, the sense of release that people had of having chosen Riverside;  Ironically that Riverside has chosen them.  Thanks for an inspirational morning!"
